ALDER
Alder is a relatively soft hardwood of medium density that has low bending strength and stiffness. The wood is fairly straight grained with a uniform texture. It is almost white when freshly cut but changes on exposure to air into a light brown with a reddish tinge. Alder machines well and has good dimensional stability after drying.

ASH
Ash has very good overall strength properties relative to its weight. It has excellent shock resistance and is good for steam bending. The colour can vary from nearly white in the sapwood, to pale yellow in the heartwood. This wood is straight grained with coarse uniform texture. Ash machines well, and is good in nailing, screwing, and finishing.

BIRCH
Birch is heavy, hard, strong, and it has very good wood bending properties. The sapwood is white in colour, and reddish brown in the heartwood. Birch is generally straight grained with a fine uniform texture. The wood works easily , glues well, takes stain and polish extremely well.

CHERRY
Cherry is of medium density with good wood bending properties. The sapwood is creamy white, and the heartwood varies from rich red to reddish brown. The smooth texture has a fine unifor straight grain. Cherry is easy to machine, and nails and glues well. When sanded, Cherry stains and polishes to an excellent finsih.

MAPLE
The wood is hard and heavy with good strenght properties. Maple has a high resistance to abrasion and wear. The colour varies from creamy white to reddish brown. The close fine texture is generally straight grained. With care, Maple machines well, turns well, and can be stained and polished to an outstanding finish.

OAK
Hard and heavy with medium bending strength. The colour varies slightly from white to light brown and is mostly straight grained with a coarse texture. Oak machines well, and stains and polishes to a good finsih.

WALNUT
The colour variers from light brown to dark chocolate brown. The wood is generally straight grained, but can be wavy ro curly grain that produces an attractive and decorative figure. Walnut is a tough hard timber of medium density, with moderate bending strength and low stiffness. It holds paint and stain very well, and can be polished to an exceptional finish.
